Respect, tolerance and patience

The patience , the tolerance and respect are three feelings and values very important and fundamental to carry out a healthy social life and live in harmony in society. Although they are concepts that usually seem similar and are confused, it should be noted that they are not.

Next we will know the importance of each of these three values .

I respectPositive feeling that carries with it the action of respect
PatienceAbility that human beings have to tolerate and endure certain situations that they consider annoying or irritating in order to achieve the proposed objective or to be able to do it in the desired way.
ToleranceAbility to know how to listen and accept other people, understanding and understanding the value of different ways of seeing life.

What is respect?

It is called regarding the positive feeling that the action of respect carries with it, this implies being able to have appreciation and recognition for another person or something, an idea, an institution, among others.

The word respect comes from the Latin “Respectus” and it means attention, consideration.

Respect is considered one of the most precious and important moral values of human beings, since it constitutes a fundamental piece to be able to have a social coexistence in harmony. Respect implies being tolerant and patient with those who do not think like one, who do not share the same interests or tastes, have different beliefs, ideas.

This value should be considered a supreme sentiment in modern societies that want to achieve a healthy, diverse and fair coexistence.

Respect usually consists of certain behaviors such as:

-Be tolerant of others

-Pay attention to who wants to communicate with us

-Accept ethical or moral rules

-Act with codes of conduct

-Value the thoughts, ideas and interests of others

One of the main characteristics of this feeling in relation to human beings is that it is linked to reciprocity, this implies that this value must be given from both sides and mutually. One of the most important keys to respect is being able to learn to respect, to understand the other, to respect their ideals, their needs or feelings. Thus, many religions, for example, give a very important emphasis to this value towards others since they consider it one of the fundamental rules to be able to have a healthy relationship.

When we speak of institutions or respect for the ideas of others, veneration for different customs and traditions is important. It is for this reason that respect is related to ethical, moral, social, legal aspects, which will indicate the way to live in harmony within society.

Violating this value is considered a lack of respect, depending on the case and the conduct may be considered greater or lesser, but all will have consequences. As a counterpart of respect we can find rudeness, violence, irreverence.

What is patience?

The patient is considered to be the ability of humans to tolerate and endure certain situations considered annoying or irritating in order to achieve the goal proposed or to do it the way you want.

The term patience derives from the lati “pati” which means “to suffer” and derives from the Greek pathos. It is for this reason that it is related to the term patient in medical matters since it is “the one who suffers.”

This ability is generally a common characteristic of more mature personalities. It is considered a virtue for those who know how to suffer and tolerate the different adversities that arise in life with strength and without regretting it. For this reason, it is common for those people who have patience to wait calmly and calmly for things to happen when they have to happen, since you consider that everything should be given its time. They carry this waiting with courage and tranquility, controlling their emotions and maintaining their behavior.

Patience is also often considered as the ability to wait for things to happen without anticipating, but you must be careful not to confuse it with comfort or apathy. It is an active attitude towards the events that you want to happen.

In eastern cultures it is very common to value patient people, since they are considered enlightened, wise men and free from the urgencies and errors of ignorance or youth.

As opposed to patience, we will find impatience which means living in a hurry, in desperation, not knowing how to wait calmly. This reaction or feeling of impatience does not lead to anything, it will not give us solutions and it is not productive, it is also a feeling that consumes a lot of energy.

Many times impatience is usually related to the fact that we are used to the culture of immediacy of the society in which we live.

What is tolerance?

The tolerance is defined as the ability to listen and accept others, understanding and value of the different ways of seeing life understanding. It is closely related to the value of respect.

The word tolerance comes from the Latin “tolerare” which means quality of those who can bear or sustain, and alludes to being able to accept those who are different from oneself.

This concept is described in the action and effect of tolerate. Tolerance is a moral value that requires full respect for the other, for their ideas, their beliefs, their interests, regardless of whether they are different from ours. It is the recognition of the diversity of religions, cultures, ways of being or acting. It is for this reason that tolerance is an essential attitude and quality to be able to live in a society with harmony and respecting each other.

He who is tolerant accepts opinions and behavior different from those that are known to him or have been established by his social environment and his moral principles. Similarly, it should be noted that being tolerant and having respect for those who think and believe differently does not imply accepting those behaviors or thoughts that violate the rights of other people.

It is important to know that tolerance is not the same as indifference. The latter implies not paying attention to it or denying the values of another person and this is not a tolerant or respectful attitude.

Like respect, tolerance implies an attitude of mutual understanding, when ideas, values, opinions are not shared, both sides must be accepted and tolerated.

This concept can also be defined as the ability to accept others, understanding that each person can have their own way of understanding and acting in life, as long as these ways of seeing life do not harm or disrespect others human beings. For example, a person who discriminates is not someone for whom we must have tolerance.

The United Nations (UN) established November 16 as the International Day of Tolerance, as a measure to combat intolerance, lack of respect and non-acceptance of cultural diversity. During this day, different types of appropriate activities are carried out and aimed at educational centers and the general public.
