Defining personal strengths

One of the key contributions positive psychology has made is helping people reflect, consider, and identify their strengths to use in leading flourishing lives. Within positive psychology, personal strengths are defined as our built-in capabilities for particular ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving. We all possess distinct character strengths that are associated with the six virtues of positive psychology theory.

When trying to find your own strength, think about what comes naturally to you and don’t choose attributes that you would like to have or admire. This is a typical trap. Especially avoid those that seem difficult to carry out. Here are some typical examples of people’s strengths:

For three years, Peterson and Seligman explored what personal strengths would look like and listed the top ones above. They referred to these as the Strengths of Character and concluded:

  • These strengths are evident throughout human history and cultures around the world.
  • Each of the strengths exists in all of us to varying degrees.
  • Positive psychology helps us recognize that we can be stronger in some areas and weaker in others, and that’s okay, it’s what makes us unique. The point is to identify your pattern of strengths so that you can use them to live a fuller life.

Definition of personal weaknesses

One of the other purposes of positive psychology is to balance our ideas of strengths and weaknesses. Positive psychology traditionally felt that other areas of psychology had placed too much emphasis on pain, trauma, and negative emotions and experiences and wanted to change this.

With that in mind, a weakness in positive psychology is viewed as a reduction in character strengths , rather than a complete deficit in one particular strength. Peterson and Seligman believe that each of us possesses all of the character strengths within us, and understanding how each feels within our personal capacity enables us to respond and behave more positively.

Positive psychology does not see weaknesses as a “non-fixable” area , and we can work to improve some of our lower character strengths if we wish, through various positive psychology techniques and tools. Here are some examples of typical people’s weaknesses:

Equally important as knowing your personal strengths is knowing your personal weaknesses. Those are attributes that will cost you a lot to improve , it is difficult for you. This is why you should try to let people who are better than you do it.

They all have weaknesses. It is a natural thing, humans are not perfect. So don’t be ashamed to look at your weaknesses. It will help you improve as a person.
