What is electrical energy?

Electric energy is known as that energy that originates from the difference in electric potential between two determined points when they are put in contact by means of an electrical transmitter . These points are of different electrical charges and this makes it possible for an electrical current to be generated between them when they come into contact with a conductor.

The contact generates an electric current that involves the transmission of electrons (negative charges) through a suitable material for this task, such as metals, from the point of storage or generation to the point of consumption. In general, this electrical energy is converted into other forms of energy such as mechanical, thermal or light.

In our daily life, the electrical energy that we consume comes from the power line or network , which we can access through plugs or sockets that are installed in our home. This network is fed by those companies that provide this service and are in charge of the generation and distribution of electricity in the city.

Types of electrical energy

The power may be of the following types:

– Static : it is that electricity generated by the friction of two bodies capable of becoming electrically charged. A clear example of this type of electricity is when we rub a comb with a handkerchief or when an arm that has been rubbed is brought close to the screen of an old television.

– Dynamics : is that electrical energy that is generated by the flow of electrical current. A clear example is a wall socket.

– Electromagnetic : is the electricity generated by electromagnetic fields. For example the electromagnet.

How is electrical energy generated?

Electrical energy can be generated in various ways, by a process that is generally carried out in a power plant or in small quantities in specialized devices.

– Power plants: Power plants are responsible for generating electricity by turning turbines that are driven by hot water steam. A clear example is by means of coal or hydrocarbon combustion or by nuclear reactions.

-Renewable resources : Certain power plants usually take advantage of different renewable resources for the generation of electrical energy. Water falls or strong winds are used to move turbines and produce electricity. Solar installations are also used, which deal with converting solar energy into electrical energy through a system of panels that receive radiation directly.

Once electricity is generated , it is transmitted through the power lines to the different cities and facilities that require it, or it is stored in various types of circuits. Like so many other forms of energy, electrical energy can be stored in  batteries  or  accumulators , which are generally made up of chemicals and metal atoms. The vast majority work in relation to the ordering of said particles that are positively or negatively charged, to generate a usable flow of electrons that resides in compartments or also called cells of different sizes.

Advantages and disadvantages of electric power

-It allows technological and scientific development : Without electricity it would not have been possible for many of the technological and scientific advances that exist today to take place.

– Accessible cost of  use : Although it is not so in all countries, this type of energy is characterized by having a relatively low cost of accessibility.

Disadvantages of electric power

Among the main disadvantages of electric power we can find:

-Its production requires a high cost: this occurs since to generate it it is necessary to use expensive fuels. This energy cannot be produced from nature, it must be generated through the use of fuels that are usually polluting or risky or through direct intervention in nature (such as the installation of hydroelectric dams).

– Important environmental cost : The use of fossil fuels for their generation can be polluted for the environment. In addition, the use of certain storage devices such as batteries generate environmental damage since once discarded they discharge their heavy metal content to the environment.

-Possible risks of burns : This implies that contact with electricity can cause burns to living beings, for example as happens with birds that collide with power lines. It can also reach fires and natural disasters when the necessary precautions are not taken in its urban installation.

– Vulnerability of power lines to extreme weather conditions: As in the case of a storm, which can cause damage to them, generating blackouts or the distribution network to fall.

Examples of electrical energy

Some everyday examples where we can observe the use of electrical energy are:

-Urban lighting : Electric energy gave cities a great revolution, allowed the replacement of gas streetlights and also expanded the useful hours of urban life for several more hours.

-The use of television and electronic equipment : Electricity allowed the birth of television and many household appliances that are fed by means of the plug to the electrical network.
