Branches of chemistry

The chemistry is a science that focuses on studying and comprises, structure, functions and transforms the material , particularly smaller structures are called atoms and molecules.

This science is present in almost all industrial processes and also in various daily aspects of our life. There are different branches of chemistry and we will detail them below.

1.Organic chemistry

This is one of the main branches of science. Its study is based on the elements and chemical compounds that carbon contains, that is, organic compounds or also called living matter. The main parents of this branch were Friedrich Wöhler and Archibald Scott Couper.

Organic chemistry allows the analysis and study of the molecular bases of living beings. It is also known as the chemistry of life, since the compounds studied are based on carbon and hydrogen, which are mainly those that allow the composition of life.

2. Biochemistry

Biochemistry deals with studying the composition, interaction and the different chemical reactions of the molecules that make up living beings. In other words, they study how organisms work.

This branch of chemistry is closely related to the studies of genetics and molecular biology.

3. Inorganic Chemistry

Inorganic chemistry is the branch that is responsible for studying chemical elements and compounds that do not have carbon and hydrogen bonds, such as acids and bases, for example. It is another of the most important branches of science.

This branch focuses on the study of matter that does not mainly make up living beings or their substances, that is, it is typical of inanimate forms of matter.

4. Analytical chemistry

Analytical chemistry or also called applied chemistry, is the branch of chemistry that focuses its study on the chemical composition of a material or a sample through the application of different chemical or physicochemical methods. It takes the theoretical knowledge of chemistry and applies it to solve problems in everyday life.

The main objective of the branch is to be able to detect and quantify the chemical elements that are present in certain substances, that is, to be able to find methods and ways to check how things are done and in what percentage.

It also studies the economic production of chemical reagents, in novel materials and in the different alternatives to conduct industrial activity without causing so much damage to the environment. This branch is widely applied in the quality control processes of the different industries.

Analytical chemistry can be divided into quantitative analytical chemistry and / or qualitative analytical chemistry. In addition, this branch includes chemical analysis, which is the practical part that uses analytical methods to solve problems related to the composition of matter.

5. Physicochemistry

Physicochemistry is the branch of chemistry that bases its study on matter but taking into account both its physical properties and its chemical properties, which allows them to establish models or theories of study. It is also called physical chemistry and studies especially what refers to energy such as chemical thermodynamics, electrochemistry, among others.

6. Industrial chemistry

It is the branch of chemistry that is oriented to the production of chemical products and materials in an industrial environment. By means of industrial chemistry, the different processes used in the industrial sector for the transformation of matter are analyzed.

Four different processes have been involved in this branch:

-The transfer of momentum

-Heat transfer

-The transfer of matter

-Chemical change

7. Quimiurgia

Chemurgy is the branch that analyzes the application of chemistry in agriculture with the aim of being able to use raw materials in other industries. A clear example of chemurgy is the use of corn husk as fuel.

8. Neuroquimica

Neurochemistry is the branch of chemistry that deals with studying the interactions of chemicals in the brain.

9. Astrochemical

Astrochemistry is the branch of chemistry that studies the chemical composition of the stars, that is, of the sun, stars, planets, interstellar matter, among others. This branch moves away from the everyday a bit to focus on the stars.

10. Crystal chemistry

This not so well known branch is the one that studies the composition of crystalline matter and its different properties.

11. Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Pharmaceutical chemistry is the branch that studies the composition, properties, structures and applications of different drugs, focusing on analyzing the interactions that occur between molecules and the biological impact. This branch combines carbon chemistry with certain chemical knowledge such as physical chemistry, biochemistry, bioinformatics, pharmacodynamics, among others.

12. Chemical engineering or technical chemistry

This branch of chemistry is based on the design, development, research, obtaining of certain substances to be applied in industrial processes that require chemical processes.

13. Radioquimica

Radiochemistry is the branch in charge of studying radioisotopes, that is, the transformations of radioactive elements or substances.

14. Stoichiometry

Stoichiometry is the branch of chemistry that is based on the study of the different relationships between weight, mass, mole, volume, among others, of the different substances that participate in a chemical reaction.

15. Photochemistry

Photochemistry is the discipline that analyzes phenomena such as the interrelationships between molecules and atoms, electromagnetic radiation, interrelationships with light, the creation of substances that generate the absorption of certain electromagnetic wavelengths, and so on.

In order to carry out a photochemical phenomenon, it is necessary to receive the light energy and the chemical reaction.

16. Latroquimica

This branch is part of chemistry as well as medicine. Latrochemistry had its bases in alchemy and tries to give chemical explanations to the different physiological and pathophysiological processes of human beings, thus trying to provide treatments with chemical substances. There are those who believe that this branch is the progenitor of biochemistry, however since the beginning of modern medicine, this branch of chemistry has been falling into disuse.

The founder of latrochemistry was Paracelsus and its application was very famous between the years 1525 and 1660.

17. Geoquimica

Geochemistry is the branch of chemistry that deals with the study of the chemical properties found in the different minerals in the earth. It is based on both geology and chemistry in order to analyze and study the structure and assets of the chemical components found in the earth.
